Oh, Hi!

The Vessel is a bimonthly newsletter intended to fill you up with introspective pleasure and cool stuff to check out. It’s a vibe (do the kids still say that?) and that vibe is: whatever is on my mind. It will take on the form of personal essays, cultural musings, and fun lists of links.

I’m Vanessa Labi, a recovering social media strategist (taking a break from it at least), arts & culture writer, and micro influencer of lifestyle things. My website was deleted in an internet accident™ earlier this year, so for now I will direct you to my Instagram, which hosts some of my writing via – you guessed it – link in bio.

Yeah, that fiddle leaf fig is a crispy shell of itself now. :(

Why subscribe?

Everyone has a niche they’re into, and my niche is newsletters. I know, I know, you might think it’s essentially the same style of content as a blog, but you would be wrong. I actually can’t believe you said that. It’s cool, it’s cool, I won’t tell anyone. It’s just….wow.

Newsletters carry a whole different energy. I might call it big lit energy? They feel more literary is what I’m saying. They also tend to be more personal and feel like a treat to receive in your inbox, rather than the drudgery of our now-compulsive doom scrolling.

Lenny Letter was one of my favorites (RIP), and I currently love Words of Women, as well as a bunch by my favorite creators and writers who publish here on Substack. I don’t know why I’m showing my work for all the reading I’ve done. I guess what I’m saying is I feel like I’ve put in my 10,000 hours, so this better be the Microsoft of newsletters.

When you subscribe, dear reader, you get full access to The Vessel newsletter and the archive of everything I’ll publish on here.

The Name

The word, “vessel,” sort of got stuck in my head recently, probably from watching Jonathan Majors’ recent GQ video of his 10 favorite things where he expressed a pure and simple satisfaction surrounding his favorite drinking vessel.

But more importantly, this newsletter will hold ideas and thoughts that are currently percolating and steeping in my brain, like a potent tea in your best mug. I like that you keep it close, its contents are fortifying, and you reach for it because you love it.

Also, this English major is not above the simple pleasure of the alliterative association with my name. 🙃

Stay up-to-date

Every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox. I spray them with perfume just before sending them out, too. So that’s something to look forward to.
